New "Bourne" Film Won't Star Matt Damon, Says Director

Photo Courtesy - Universal StudiosThe next Bourne movie will not feature Jason Bourne, which means the film may not have Matt Damon, either.  Damon has portrayed the character, an assassin who's lost his memory, in The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and the most recent film in the series, 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum.  But the director of the next Bourne film says it will be an original story that will not include Jason Bourne.

Director Tony Gilroy tells that The Bourne Legacy is not a reboot, but rather an "expansion" that advances some of the story lines from the previous films.

He says, "I'm building a legend and an environment and a wide conspiracy...the world we're making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne's return [down the road]."  He says the project will have a "whole new hero" and emphasizes that "no one's replacing Matt Damon."

Gilroy wrote the first three Bourne films and will pen the screenplay for the new sequel.  He previously directed Michael Clayton and Duplicity.
