Penn is best remembered for his work on Bonnie and Clyde, which starred Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the iconic bank robbers. The film was nominated for 10 Oscars, including a best director nod for Penn. Actress Estelle Parsons won an Oscar for her performance in the film.

Penn is also closely associated with The Miracle Worker, the story of the blind and deaf author Helen Keller. He directed it as a TV play in the 1950s before bringing it to Broadway, winning a Tony Award in the process. A few years later, he directed the film adaptation of The Miracle Worker, which earned Penn an Oscar nomination and both Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke an Oscar win.

Penn received a third Oscar nomination in 1970 for Alice's Restaurant. His other film credits include the Marlon Brando-Jack Nicholson flick The Missouri Breaks and the Gene Hackman thriller Night Moves.
