Justin Timberlake Lands Role of His Career in The Social Network

Photo Courtesy - ABC NewsJustin Timberlake is receiving the best reviews of his acting career for his role in The Social Network, in theaters on Friday.  In fact, there's even some Oscar buzz starting.

Timberlake mostly credits his good reviews to movie writer Aaron Sorkin's script and director David Fincher's skill.  Timberlake says he had no interest in being a diva on the set, and that he was willing to put in the work.  He remembers Fincher sitting down with him and saying that because of Timberlake's live performance background, "I'm not going to break your neck doing take after take after take."  But Timberlake says he told Fincher, "I'm not a running back or a wide receiver. I'm coming onto this as a linebacker, and I'll make that hit as many times as you want."

One challenge Timberlake faced on The Social Network was the fact that he was playing Sean Parker, the actual co-founder of Napster, who later went on to become an adviser to the founders of Facebook and, in 2004, its president.  But he says, "I don't feel a responsibility to mimic anyone who's living. I feel a responsibility to create a character that's interesting to the film."  Timberlake says the way he chose to approach playing Parker was to pinpoint what he felt was his defining characteristic.  He says, "You really want to peg what makes that character tick, and I think Sean really knows how to read people.  That's his biggest gift and I think he uses it...throughout the movie."

When asked about his music career in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, and if he's being pressured to get something out there, Timberlake responded, "Does a painter make a painting because he has to make it by December 21st?  No...it happens when it pours out of him. That's how music is for me."  He added, "I will never stop making music...except I just don't know [in] what capacity I want to be involved anymore."  Timberlake hasn't released an album since 2006.

Pregnant Alicia Keys Presides Over Annual Black Ball Charity Concert

Photo Courtesy - KeepAChildAlive.org(NEW YORK) -- Singer Alicia Keys, who's about eight months pregnant, walked the red carpet Thursday night to attend her annual charity event, the Black Ball.  The event raises money for Keys' charity, Keep a Child Alive, which provides medicine to children and families living with HIV/AIDS in Africa and the developing world.

The singer was most excited to talk about a new way in which people can donate to the organization, called "Buy Life."  The way Keys explains it, she and other celebrities have posed for a series of ads wearing t-shirts with barcodes on them and the slogan "Buy Life."  Scanning that barcode with your cell phone triggers a donation to Keep a Child Alive.  She explains, "You're literally saving a life.  [It's just like] you go to the store and you get your juice and your cereal and your chicken, and you scan it and you pay for it.  Now you can scan this t-shirt and you're part of changing the world."

Keys also talked about the example she hopes to set for her unborn child.  She told reporters, "The baby is going to see everything that I do, and that we do, and I think that being a giving individual, being a person that knows that we can all do something...reaching out to one person in the world....is changing that one person...and that's a big deal.  So I plan to show that in every way."

Performers at the event included Jay-Z, Sade and Janelle Monae, while guests spotted on the red carpet included Uma Thurman, Usher, Deepak Chopra and 30 Rock star Jane Krakowski.

Singer Jay Sean, who just became an ambassador for Keep a Child Alive's work in India, spoke about how excited he was to be involved with the charity.  Sean, who nearly became a doctor, told reporters, "This is a wonderful way of me being able to still fulfill that side of me.  I wanted to become a doctor because I wanted to...spend my life trying to help others. And I think to be able to tie that in with my music is just the most incredible thing."

Ellen DeGeneres "Devastated" by Rutgers Student's Suicide

Photo Courtesy - WAD Productions, Inc./Youtube.com(BURBANK, Calif.) -- Ellen DeGeneres is speaking out about the suicide death of a Rutgers University student who took his own life after a roomate allegedly streamed footage of him having sex with another male student online.

"I am devastated over the death of 18-year-old Tyler Clementi," the gay talk show host says in a video commentary. "He was outed as being gay on the Internet and he killed himself.  One life lost in this senseless way is tragic. This needs to be a wake-up call to everyone that teenage bullying and teasing is an epidemic in this country and the death rate is climbing. We have an obligation to stop this."

Clementi leapt to his death from the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22.  Prosecutors in the case have charged Clementi's roommate, Dharun Ravi, and classmate Molly Wei with several crimes, including violating New Jersey's privacy laws. They could face hate crime charges if their actions are found to have been substantially based on Clementi's sexuality.
