Alec Baldwin Plans to Run for Mayor of NYC

Dario Cantatore/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Alec Baldwin may not be ready to run for political office now, but when he is, he's already got his prize picked out.

In an interview with The New York Times, Baldwin says he wants to run for mayor of New York City, though he probably will sit out the 2013 election due to his commitment to 30 Rock.

The 53-year-old actor, who intends to leave the NBC comedy after the upcoming season, says he's talking with two top universities about enrolling in a master's program in politics and government in order to help him "better understand what the fiscal imperatives of that job are."

Baldwin isn't worried that his past personal problems, including the voicemail leaked in 2007 in which he called his then-11-year-old daughter a "rude, thoughtless little pig," will hurt his chances of becoming mayor.

He concedes, "What I do for a living has provided people with an almost bottomless container of video clips of me doing the most asinine things."

Baldwin says he plans to establish a permanent residence in New York City before he runs for mayor.  His legal residence is on his native Long Island, but he has an apartment in Manhattan.
