'American Idol's' Top Six Sing the Songs of Carole King

Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- American Idol's top six finalists took on the songs of Carole King Wednesday night, with each contestant performing both solo and as part of a duet.

As always, judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez were on hand to critique the Idol hopefuls.  Producer Jimmy Iovine invited Babyface to join him this week in mentoring the contestants.

Here's what happened:

Jacob Lusk was up first with a solo rendition of "Oh No, Not My Baby."  Tyler said he was glad he shook his tail feathers this week. Lopez thought he killed it, and Jackson liked that he gave an energetic performance.

Lauren Alaina got some good encouragement from Babyface this week as she worked up "Where You Lead." Lopez was very proud of her and thought she really pushed through a lot of boundaries this week. Jackson thought she had extra swagger this week. He didn't love the song choice, but Jackson said she came out with a vengeance. Tyler said she manifested light and encouraged her to keep shining.

Haley Reinhart and Casey Abrams teamed up for the night's first duet on "I Feel the Earth Move."  Tyler said it seemed as though Abrams was in love with Reinhart during the performance, and that they worked the stage very well.

Scotty McCreery stepped out of his country comfort zone a bit with one of Carole's best-known songs, "You've Got a Friend." Jackson applauded him for showing off the higher part of his vocal range, saying the performance was flawless. Tyler didn't think he had ever sounded better, and Lopez thought he proved he's a great storyteller with this performance.

James Durbin got some requests on to sing "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," so he decided to go with it. Tyler revealed this was the song that played when he first made out with a girl, noting that it was at a bowling alley and "I didn't strike out." He loved his performance of it. Lopez called the performance "magical," and said he was the "star of the night" and this season's most consistent performer. Jackson thought this performance really proved he is a great singer and could win the whole competition.

Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery insisted they had a brother-and-sister energy between them instead of anything romantic before joining forces on "Up on the Roof."  Lopez thought it was beautiful and thought McCreery did a good job taking a back seat to Alaina's big vocals.

Casey Abrams returned to sing "Hi-De-Ho." Jackson loved how he always brings a different vibe every week and said it took him back to New Orleans. Tyler thought he worked the stage very well, and Lopez said he was in his element this week. She wants to see him loosen up and move around a bit more in the future.

Haley Reinhart chose "Beautiful" for her solo turn. Tyler said he heard God in her voice and told her she nailed it. Lopez said she had one of the best voices in the competition. Jackson didn't love the beginning, but he got into it towards the end of the performance.

Jacob Lusk and James Durbin returned for a duet on "I'm into Something Good." Midway through the performance, Lusk and Durbin went down to the judges' table to sing the song to Lopez. Tyler thought they had fun with it, but he wasn't sure where they were going with the performance.

Someone is going home on American Idol's results show Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET.  Bruno Mars and Idol alum Crystal Bowersox are also set to perform.
