"Avatar's" Sam Worthington Settles Assault Case

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Avatar star Sam Worthington has settled the assault case against him that stemmed from a scuffle with a paparazzo in New York on Feb. 23.

Worthington did not appear in Manhattan Criminal Court on April 8, but his attorney, Stacey Richman, took a conditional deal on his behalf.  The deal is often referred to as an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, and is usually offered to first-time offenders in low-level cases, according to The New York Daily News.

Worthington submitted a waiver to the court saying that he was "contractually committed in Europe at this time," and he thanked the court for working around his schedule.  Worthington also wrote in a signed statement, "I understand that as long as I continue to lead a law abiding life, this matter will be dismissed and sealed."  There were no additional requirements Worthington had to fulfill under the terms of the deal.

Back in February, Worthington was arrested for punching photographer Sheng Li after an altercation involving the actor's partner, Lara Bingle. Li continues to face charges in connection with the incident.

The Australian actor is set to star in three Avatar sequels, the first of which will be released in 2016.
