(NEW YORK) -- The electric guitar owned and used by Bob Dylan, most notably during the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, sold for $965,000 by Christie's auction house.
The 1964 Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar set a new World Auction Record for any guitar, according to Christie's.
"A tremendous amount of international interest was generated at the time of the sale's announcement," Christie's specialist and sale's auctioneer Tom Lecky said in a statement Friday. "Today's result justifies the mythic status of this guitar in the annals of music history."
Dylan played the guitar at the folk festival, marking a defining moment in music history where he publicly moved from acoustic folk to electric rock n' roll, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
