Brazilian Premiere of "World War Z" Cancelled Due to Unrest

Paramount Pictures(LOS ANGELES) -- Brazil didn't have the opportunity to welcome Brad Pitt to its country on Monday.

Pitt and director Marc Forster had been scheduled to attend the premiere of their film, World War Z, in Rio de Janeiro, but Paramount Pictures Brazil pulled the plug on the event due to the current unrest in the South American nation.

Paramount Pictures Brazil says in a statement published by The Los Angeles Times that it made the decision "in light of the current and ongoing events taking place in Brazil."

It adds, "Everyone involved with World War Z send their respect and goodwill toward the people of Brazil at this time of national unrest."

Brazilians have protested for days over several issues, including public transportation fares and the cost of hosting next year's World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

World War Z opened in second place in the U.S. over the weekend, earning $66.4 million.  A sequel is planned.
