Computer, Human Tied After Day One of 'Jeopardy!' Challenge

Photo Courtesy - Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- So far, man is equal to machine on Jeopardy!

The IBM computing system Watson is tied with human player Brad Rutter following the first edition of the game show pitting Watson against the two most successful contestants in Jeopardy! history.  Watson and Rutter ended Monday's Jeopardy! tied at $5,000, with Ken Jennings trailing both, with $2,000.

The challenge of having a computer compete on Jeopardy! was evident when host Alex Trebek asked a question regarding the decade when the first modern crossword puzzle was published and Oreo cookies made their debut.  Jennings incorrectly answered the 1920s, after which Watson guessed, "What is 1920s?"  Trebek responded that Jennings had already made that guess.

Watson's battle with Rutter and Jennings will continue Tuesday and Wednesday.  They're all playing for charity, with the winner receiving $1 million.
