Dave Matthews Hitchhikes with Fans to Concert

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic(NEW YORK) -- Music superstars like Dave Matthews know that achieving super-stardom can sometimes come down to a combination of timing and luck. Those same two ingredients led to two mega-fans of Matthews’ to meet the singer and get treated like stars themselves.

Emily Kraus and her boyfriend, Joe Proffitt, were on their way to Matthews’ concert in Hershey, Pa., this weekend when they decided to take a back road to make up for lost time because Proffitt had been running late.

After Proffitt told Kraus to make a left, he saw a sight that would change their night in ways they could never have imagined.

“I see these three people and a guy on a mountain bike,” Proffitt said Tuesday on ABC’s Good Morning America.  “I look over and said, ‘That was Dave.’”

Kraus wasn’t convinced her boyfriend had spotted the man they had tickets to watch perform in front of thousands of people just a few hours later but she agreed to turn around, nonetheless.

“We pull up right next to them and I opened my window and I say, ‘Dave?’” Kraus recalled.  “And he was like, ‘Yup, pull in over there.’  And I did.”

It turns out that Matthews had taken his bike out before his show and gotten a flat tire.  Luckily for them all, Kraus’ parents had just attached a bike rack onto her car so she and Proffitt were able to help Matthews out.

After loading Matthews’ bike, the trio drove to the concert venue in Kraus’ car, while Kraus and Proffitt tried to figure out how to make small talk with a Grammy-winning musician.

“We asked him where he had just come from and how long he was touring for the summer and what his plans were,” Kraus said. “We asked him if he had ever been to Hersheypark because the Hershey Amusement Park is in Hershey.”

The couple’s extraordinary night didn’t end once they’d dropped Matthews off.  As they were tailgating with friends, Kraus got a call on her cellphone.

“It’ somebody from The Dave Matthews Band and they said we’d love to have you come back and have dinner tonight with the band and hang out backstage for a little bit,” Kraus said.  “So we did that.  We ate dinner in the lounge and were backstage for a little while.”

The couple, who had been to Matthews’ concerts before, also got upgraded to front-row seats, all the better to hear the onstage shout-out to them from Matthews himself.

“And then a nice lady named Emily rode up in a red car with a bicycle rack on it and gave me a ride on to the gig,” Matthews sang.

To commemorate their unexpected ride with Matthews, the singer autographed Kraus and Proffitt’s concert tickets, signing them, “Thanks for the ride.”

“They’re going to be framed and everything and hung up on the wall,” Kraus said.  “It was incredible.”
