Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher Are Divorcing

Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Amid persistent rumors that Ashton Kutcher cheated on her, Demi Moore announced Thursday that she is ending her six-year marriage to the Two and a Half Men actor.

"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton," the 49-year-old Moore said in a statement obtained by ABC News. "As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation."

Not long after Moore issued her statement, Kutcher posted the following message via his Twitter account: "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."

Moore and Kutcher tied the knot in September 2005.  In late September, there were reports that Kutcher, who is 33 years old, had an affair with a woman he met at a San Diego nightclub.  Soon afterward, Kutcher responded to the speculation by tweeting, "When you ASSUME to know that which you know nothing of you make an ASS out of U and ME."  Earlier this week, Us Weekly reported that the couple recently went to the home of Moore's ex-husband, Bruce Willis, in the Turks and Caicos Islands to work on their marriage.

Moore was previously married to Willis for 13 years. They have three daughters together.
