(LOS ANGELES) -- The highly anticipated film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey is set to hit theaters next year.
Deadline.com reports Universal Pictures and Focus Features announced on Thursday that the film, which centers on the relationship between college student Anastasia Steele and young billionaire Christian Grey, will premiere in North America on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014.
There's still no word on when Fifty Shades of Grey will premiere worldwide.
Sam Taylor-Johnson is on board to direct the film adaptation of E. L. James' bestselling erotic novel.
Previously, it was rumored that Gus Van Sant, whose credits include Good Will Hunting and Milk, would direct the film. Van Sant had essentially auditioned for the director's chair, shooting a scene in which Steele loses her virginity to Grey, according to TheWrap.com.
The highly coveted roles of Steele and Grey are also not confirmed, although Alex Pettyfer, who appeared in Magic Mike last year, played Grey for Van Sant's audition scene. Emma Watson has also been linked to the film, but the actress denied those reports.
