(LOS ANGELES) -- On Thursday night, the stars of the Fox series Glee paid their respects to the late Cory Monteith with an episode titled "The Quarterback."
The episode began with the cast standing on a stage, wearing all black. Together, they sang "Seasons of Love" from the musical Rent. At the end of the performance, a photo was displayed of Monteith's character, Finn Hudson, on a football field.
Finn's death had already occurred by the start of the episode. His cause of death was never revealed.
Monteith's co-star and real-life girlfriend, Lea Michele, didn't factor into the episode until late, when she returned to McKinley High to reunite with her former peers. Through tears, Michele's Rachel told them, "I loved Finn and he loved me and he loved all of you guys. I know he did."
The episode also featured performances of The Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You," Bruce Springsteen's "No Surrender," and James Taylor's "Fire and Rain." All proceeds from downloads of songs from the episode will go to Project Limelight, a free theater program that was close to Monteith's heart.
The Glee tribute ended with a graphic dedicated to Monteith, who died in July of a heroin and alcohol overdose. He was 31.
