Helen Mirren Says She Loves Drummers Despite Outburst

GABRIEL BOUYS/AFP/Getty Images(LONDON) -- Helen Mirren has a strong admiration for drummers, as long as they are not interrupting her performance in a theater.

The Oscar-winning actress made headlines over the weekend when she stepped out of a London theater -- where she was portraying Queen Elizabeth the Second in a play, and was dressed for the part -- and asked a band of street drummers outside to quit making so much noise.

On Monday, Mirren, 67, commented on the incident, telling media outlets, including ITV News, "The irony is I love drumming and I love drummers.  In another situation I would have been out here just enjoying it with all the punters."

"Punter" is a British term for a customer.

Mirren addressed the reporters while wearing a T-shirt promoting a gay music festival that the drummers were helping to publicize.  A message on the shirt read, "Yes Please!  Just not outside a theatre!"

Mirren is starring in the play The Audience, which focuses on the queen's meetings with Britain's prime ministers at Buckingham Palace over the course of 60 years.
