(NEW YORK) -- Idris Elba may play a detective on BBC America's Luther, but the actor had no idea a woman he was dating lied when she told him he had fathered a child with her.
The 41-year-old British actor reveals in the new issue of GQ that a woman he dated previously, Desiree Newberry, told him she was pregnant with his child. It would've been the actor's first son.
Elba tells the magazine, “The celebration of having a son -- from a man’s perspective, it’s massive.”
But the celebration turned sour when others insinuated that the child may not have been his.
“It wasn’t immediately obvious -- well, it was, because he didn’t look like me,” says Elba, adding, “But it wasn’t immediately obvious what had gone down.”
After a paternity test, Elba had to face the harsh truth: he wasn't the child's father.
"To be given that and then have it taken away so harshly, was like taking a full-on punch in the face: POW," he continues.
"You know, the truth is -- like, even admitting it, I’ll probably get laughed at for the rest of my life. But it is just tragic, and it happened," he adds. "It happened to me. I moved on. I’ve not been an angel in my life, either. Do you know what I’m saying? So to a certain extent, what goes around comes around."
Elba eventually had a child with his now ex-wife Kim, a daughter named Isan, in 2002.
