Isaiah Washington Returning to "Grey's Anatomy"

Steve Granitz/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- Grey's Anatomy has a surprise twist in store for its fans: Isaiah Washington is returning to the ABC series. Yes, the same Washington who was fired from the show in 2007 for using an anti-gay slur multiple times, once in reference to then-co-star T.R. Knight.

The Hollywood Reporter says Washington will reprise his role of Dr. Preston Burke in an episode set to air sometime in May. His appearance is tied to the impending departure of Sandra Oh's character, Cristina Yang, who was once engaged to Preston.

Series creator Shonda Rhimes says in a statement, "It's important to me that Cristina's journey unfolds exactly as it should." She adds, "Burke is vital to that journey -- he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang."

Washington played Burke for three seasons before his firing. Since then, he's made sporadic appearances on TV, including in a short-lived remake of Bionic Woman and in Law & Order: LA. He's featured in the new CW series The Hundred.
