Italian Motorcyclist Marco Simoncelli Killed in Race Crash

Saeed Khan/AFP/Getty Images)(SEPANG, Malaysia) -- Italian motorcyclist Marco Simoncelli was killed Sunday after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed during the Malaysian MotoGP race in Sepang, authorities report. He was 24.

Simoncelli was flung from his bike in the second lap of the race and was hit by fellow competitors Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi as his body skid across the track.

He was transported to Sepang for treatment where he endured CPR for 45 minutes before he was pronounced dead at 4.56 p.m. local time.

Simoncelli’s death follows shortly after British IndyCar racer Dan Wheldon died in a fiery crash in Las Vegas a week ago.
