Jesse Tyler Ferguson Had to Come Out to Dad Three Times

ABC/Lorenzo Bevilaqua(NEW YORK) -- Jesse Tyler Ferguson is a gay man onscreen and off. Along with playing one-half of Modern Family's hilarious same-sex couple, Ferguson in real life is married to Justin Mikita after exchanging vows in July. The ABC star recently stated during a sit-down with Oprah Winfrey that he had to come out to his own father three times before his father accepted his revelation.

"He would conveniently forget," Ferguson admits on the episode of the OWN network's Oprah's Next Chapter airing Sunday. "The last time was, he asked me if I had a girlfriend, and I was like, 'Dad, I'm gay. Do we have to go back to this every time?'"

"It was a process for him as well," Ferguson continues, "...He had to figure out how to deal with having a son that wasn't the ideal son that he had. You know, he had this whole ideal of what his son was going to be. And he had to reconfigure his thinking."

Ferguson joins comedian Wanda Sykes and Scandal's Dan Bucatinsky in a special edition of Oprah's Next Chapter, which focuses on being gay in Hollywood. The episode is set to air on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on OWN.
