J.J. Abrams Releases Mysterious "Stranger" Video Online

Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic(NEW YORK) -- Director J.J. Abrams released a mysterious video from his production company Bad Robot on Monday.  Abrams, of course, is best known for being the co-creator of television’s Lost, the director of Star Trek Into Darkness and the soon-to-be director of Star Wars: Episode VII.

The video is called Stranger, and no one is quite sure what it is about.  The video begins with a man with loose ropes around his wrists arriving on a beach from the water and struggling to climb toward lights in the distance.

The voice-over declares, "He arrived knowing nothing of himself.  Who is he?  Soon he will know.  Because what begins at the water shall end there, and what ends there shall once more begin.  This is what happens -- men become lost, men vanish, men are erased...and reborn."

At the word "erased," the camera pans toward an out-of-focus light, which is being held by a man whose mouth is stitched closed.  After that visual, the words "Soon he will know" appear on screen and drop off one by one, with "know" vanishing first, then "he" and "will."

Online speculation has ranged from it being a trailer to an upcoming Aquaman movie to a cryptic teaser trailer for the next Star Wars movie, but no one knows for sure.
