Jodie Foster on Mel Gibson: 'If He Does Something Wrong...Jail Him'

Michael Kovac/FilmMagic(NEW YORK) -- She might be biased, but The Beaver director and co-star Jodie Foster calls Mel Gibson’s performance in the film “extraordinary.”

“I could never have asked for anything more,” Foster told ABC News Radio, adding, “it’s a dream come true.”

While Foster should be basking in the afterglow of releasing her labor of love, she is instead in the middle of a publicity tour riddled with queries about her troubled and controversial star.

“It’s hard to have to have to answer every question about him, somebody that I really care about who I know and love and who has been an incredible friend and a loyal person and somebody that I really admire, " says Foster, who has known Gibson since they co-starred in the 1994 Western comedy Maverick.  "So that’s been hard....and, you know, I’m as nutty as a fruitcake so at some point I will internalize that.  Not yet, but at some point I will curl up into a ball I’m sure."

It’s hard to believe anyone will ever find Foster -- a cordial, warm and funny interview subject -- curled up in a corner.  Still, the two-time Oscar winner is quite blunt about the ramifications of Gibson’s actions.

“I can’t excuse his behavior, of course, and if he does something wrong he needs to go to jail, and if he breaks the law he needs to go to jail.  If he’s filled with rage he needs to come to terms with that rage and that’s his personal process in life.”

If Gibson’s dirty laundry had never been aired, The Beaver has the pedigree to be one of those movies we would’ve seen released during Oscar season.  Still, the combined star power of Foster and fellow Academy Award-winner Gibson may yet prove a potent box office combination.  Ask Foster, though, and she says it ultimately doesn't matter -- to her, or to Gibson.

“As somebody who actually knows him as opposed to somebody who doesn’t know him...There are lifelong struggles for him, ahead of him and he has really bigger problems than whether he’s going to get nominated for an Oscar or whether the film is going to make any money. “

The Beaver opens in limited release on Friday.
