The Washington, D.C. event -- which recognized the recipients for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts -- was attended by President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama and featured appearances by Julia Roberts, John Travolta, Chris Rock, Barbara Walters, Alec Baldwin and several musicians.

Aside from Winfrey and McCartney, this year's honorees were iconic country singer and songwriter Merle Haggard, Broadway composer and lyricist Jerry Herman, and dancer/choreographer/director Bill T. Jones.

The 33rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors special airs on CBS at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.
