"Mean Girls" musical coming to Broadway in 2018

Getty Images/Paul Hawthorne(NEW YORK) -- Following a world premiere at Washington, D.C.'s National Theatre on October 31, a musical version of the iconic 2004 movie Mean Girls will be headed to Broadway on April 8. 

Co-written by the movie's writer and star Tina Fey, along with her husband, composer Jeff Richmond, the musical will start previews March 12, 2018 before it officially opens at New York City's August Wilson Theatre.

Like the movie, the production will follow Cady Heron, a girl raised in Africa who then moves to the U.S. and is forced to navigate the social battleground of high school. Along the way, Cady becomes an enemy of the school's "mean girls" squad, The Plastics, and plots to take them down. Lindsay Lohanplayed Cady in the movie.

Fey herself announced the dates via Twitter; Casey Nicholaw, a Tony winner for The Book of Mormon, among other productions, will direct the musical.

Tickets go on sale to the general public October 3.
