(LOS ANGELES) -- Michael Douglas twice made mention of his "wife," Catherine Zeta-Jones, at Sunday's Emmy Awards -- when he accepted his award for outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or movie for his performance in Behind the Candelabra, and again backstage when he discussed the movie with reporters.
His choice of words was curious, if only because the couple announced their separation last month. So what exactly is their status at the moment? Douglas clarified it to People magazine prior to the ceremony.
The 68-year-old actor said, "We're working things out, talking, and we'll see how she goes."
That echoes what a rep for Zeta-Jones said late last month: "Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage."
