(LOS ANGELES) -- Miley Cyrus spent much of 2013 onstage in various stages of undress, but a picture she tweeted out Saturday that appeared to show her topless was posted for a good cause.
The snap, which showed Miley, tongue out as usual and hiking up her shirt -- and her breasts protected by graphical hearts reading "Merry Christmas" -- read, "Merry Christmas ???? THANK YOU NY for being one of the few states to @freethenipple."
The tweet was in reference to the documentary Free the Nipple, about U.S. media's censorship of the body part. Director Lina Esco is fighting against the MPAA's NC-17 rating, the Daily Dot website reports.
New York is one of a handful of the 50 states in which being topless isn't illegal -- though as Esco points out, cops still arrest women for it.
As responses to Cyrus’ tweet raced in, she shot back -- using spicier language -- that her pic wasn't about showing off, "it's about equality." She also tweeted that she found it funny some were responding negatively to her post. "my topless pic is showing less than when I wear clothes haha," she tweeted. "People are proving my point so easily."
