(LONDON) -- Nigella Lawson's husband, art collector and ad agency co-founder Charles Saatchi, has announced that he's filed for divorce from his wife of 10 years.
Saatchi, who's 70, was widely criticized after photos were published showing him clutching his 53-year-old celebrity chef wife by the throat at a London restaurant on June 9.
He says in a statement to the Daily Mail newspaper in the U.K., "I am sorry to announce that Nigella Lawson and I are getting divorced." He adds, "I feel that I have clearly been a disappointment to Nigella during the last year or so, and I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain that I abhor violence of any kind against women, and have never abused her physically in any way."
Saatchi concludes, "This is heartbreaking for both of us as our love was very deep, but in the last year we have become estranged and drifted apart. The row photographed at Scott's restaurant could equally have been Nigella grasping my neck to hold my attention -- as indeed she has done in the past."
Saatchi has been cautioned by police -- a formal warning that doesn't carry a penalty, though it does mean he now has a criminal record, which could complicate travel to and from the U.S.
