NJ Mayor Receives Award for Rejecting 'Jersey Shore' Spin-Off

Craig Barritt/Getty Images(HOBOKEN, N.J.) -- After announcing late last month that her city denied a film permit to producers of an upcoming Jersey Shore spin-off, the mayor of Hoboken, N.J., has received kudos from an Italian-American organization.

The Italian-American One Voice Coalition, which aims to fight defamation, discrimination and negative stereotyping against Italian-Americans, was slated to give Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer its "Una Voice" award before a city council meeting on Wednesday night, according to The Jersey Journal.

The president of the organization said in a statement, "MTV’s Jersey Shore has been a blight on the State of New Jersey as well as an insult to all Italian-Americans."

Zimmer has said the film permit was denied "based on protecting public safety and quality of life concerns for Hoboken residents."

In its statement, the Italian-American One Voice Coalition accused Jersey City of taking "one step backwards" by granting a film permit to the spin-off.

The spin-off will star Jersey Shore cast members Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley -- neither of which, incidentally, are actually Italian.
