'Phantom' Makes Broadway History with 10,000th Performance

Raymond Boyd/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Phantom of the Opera made history Saturday afternoon with its 10,000th performance, more than two decades after it opened on Broadway.

According to the New York Times, the Broadway hit had its most successful year in 2011 after grossing $44.8 million, capped by a record-breaking $1.6 million in its final week.

Broadway's longest running show opened Jan. 26, 1988 and has gone on to appear in 27 countries and 145 cities, totaling $5.6 billion worldwide.
