(NEW YORK) -- Wednesday was an exciting day for movie fans, as previews for two highly-anticipated films were released.
Let's start with Divergent, whose first full-length trailer is now available online. Based on the popular book by Veronica Roth, the movie is expected to be a big hit with the young adult crowd, a la The Hunger Games.
The story is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago, where humanity is divided into factions, each with a different attribute. Dauntless are fearless, Erudite are intelligent, Abnegation are selfless, Amity are peaceful and Candor are honest.
Our hero, Beatrice “Tris” Prior, played by Shailene Woodley, was raised in Abnegation, and when she turns 16, she -- along with all the other 16-year-olds -- takes an aptitude test that tells her which faction she is best suited for. She learns she is “Divergent” -- she shows equal aptitude for three different factions. This makes her a dangerous threat and she must keep that information a secret.
Going against her family, she shocks everyone by choosing to join Dauntless...and discovers a world of violence, courage, romance and conspiracy.
Divergent, which also stars Kate Winslet and Ashley Judd, will arrive in theaters on March 21, 2014.
Also on Wednesday, Disney offered a teaser trailer for its fantasy story Maleficent. It gives us our first real glimpse of Angelina Jolie as the Sleeping Beauty villain.
In the minute-and-a-half clip, a young Aurora, played by Elle Fanning, approaches a semi-hidden Maleficent in a forest. Aurora tells her, "I know you're there. Your shadow, it's been following me ever since I was small. Don't be afraid."
Jolie's Maleficent replies, "I'm not afraid." When Aurora urges her to come out, Maleficent ominously declares, "Then you'll be afraid."
The debut of the teaser trailer comes one day after Disney released an image of the first Maleficent poster featuring Jolie. The movie opens May 30, 2014.
