Report: Disney Considering Muppets Stage Show

FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Muppets once took Manhattan in a classic 1984 movie.  Late last month, they invaded New York City again, as part of a proposed stage show based on Jim Henson's beloved characters.

According to Variety, Tony Award-nominated director Alex Timbers oversaw a brief presentation of the potential production at a Disney theater in the Big Apple on May 31.  Disney owns the Muppets franchise.

The presentation included more than 85 Muppets, as well as a performance by Kermit the Frog of "Rainbow Connection," made famous in the 1979 film The Muppet Movie.

The president of Disney Theatrical describes the presentation to Variety as a "test of concept."  In other words, those involved were attempting to determine how difficult it would be to put together a Muppets stage show.

It remains to be seen whether Disney will move forward with the project, though the exec says he's "very intrigued."
