Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Adds Six Groups to 2012 Class

George Rose/Getty Images(CLEVELAND) -- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's class of 2012 is expanding. According to Cleveland's The Plain Dealer, six groups -- the Crickets, the Comets, the Miracles, the Blue Caps, the Famous Flames and the Midnighters -- will also be inducted this year.

The selections were made by a special committee, which decided the groups belonged in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with their already-enshrined lead singers. The president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Terry Stewart, says, "There had always been conversations about why the groups weren't included when the lead singers were inducted."

An official announcement is expected to come Thursday.

The Crickets guitarist Sonny Curtis, who played alongside inductee Buddy Holly, reacted to the news of the band's upcoming induction by telling The Plain Dealer, "It's a real honor to take our place among all those great rock and rollers."

The Comets performed with Bill Haley; the Miracles were Smokey Robinson's group; the Famous Flames backed James Brown; the Midnighters are linked to Hank Ballard; and the Blue Caps played with Gene Vincent.

Those groups join previously announced 2012 inductees: Beastie Boys, Donovan, Guns N' Roses, Laura Nyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Small Faces/The Faces. The induction ceremony will take place on April 14 in Cleveland.
