Beatles 'Abbey Road' Street Crossing Gets Preservation Status

Photo Courtesy - EMI(LONDON) _- The zebra-striped crosswalk on the cover of The Beatles album Abbey Road has been given a Grade II status in the U.K. for its "cultural and historical importance."  The status, usually reserved for buildings and monuments, means that the spot is recognized as "nationally important and of special interest," according to the BBC.

John Penrose, the U.K.'s minister for tourism and heritage, says that the crosswalk is "no castle or cathedral but, thanks to the Beatles and a 10-minute photo shoot...has just as strong a claim as any to be seen as part of our heritage."

Abbey Road Studios, where the Fab Four recorded most of their legendary albums, was also given a Grade II status prior to the crosswalk receiving the honor.
