'Airplane!', 'Empire Strikes Back' to Join Library of Congress

Image Courtesy - Paramount Pictures(WASHINGTON) -- It's official. When, in hundreds of years, the future of humanity scours the U.S. Library of Congress for clues as to how primitively we lived back in the early 21st century, the jive-talking granny in Airplane! could very well be integral to the study.

That movie, a slapstick comedy from 1980, along with 24 other films will be added to the National Film Registry this year because they have been deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant," according to the National Film Registry Board.

Nielsen died just after 5:30 p.m. EST in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  He was surrounded by his wife Barbaree and friends, said agent John S. Kelly.

"We are saddened by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60-year career in motion pictures and television," Kelly said in a statement.

The actor was born on Feb. 11, 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan.  Nielsen was married four times and has two daughters from his second marriage.

Before his entrance into the acting world, Nielsen joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and worked as a Calgary radio disc jockey.  He came to the Hollywood scene in the 1950s following a stint in 150 live television drama performances.

His feature film debut in The Vagabond King helped to open the doors to other leading roles in films such as Forbidden Planet, The Opposite Sex and Hot Summer Night.

He also starred in the romantic comedy Tammy and the Bachelor with Debbie Reynolds and played Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion in the Disney series The Swamp Fox.´╗┐
