Andy Rooney Signs Off from '60 Minutes'

Stockbyte/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- After 33 years with 60 Minutes, Andy Rooney said goodbye to the CBS news program on Sunday night with his 1,097th essay.

The 92-year-old Rooney said that while he is leaving 60 Minutes, "writers don't retire and I'll always be a writer."

Rooney said of his job, "I probably haven't said anything here that you didn't already know or have already thought.  That's what a writer does.  There aren't too many original thoughts in the world."

He added, "A writer's job is to tell the truth.  I believe that if all the truth were known about everything in the world it would be a better place to live.  I know I've been terribly wrong sometimes, but I think I've been right more than I've been wrong."

Rooney ended his essay in his typical cantankerous manner.  He thanked the viewers for their support through the years, but then cautioned that if they see him in a restaurant, "Please, just let me eat my dinner."

Andy Rooney to End Regular ’60 Minutes’ Segment on Sunday

Stockbyte/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Andy Rooney is slated to end his regular 60 Minutes segment on Sunday after more than 33 years with the news program.

CBS announced Tuesday that the veteran television personality will deliver his last original essay for the news magazine on Sunday, Oct. 2. It will be his final regular appearance on the broadcast and it will be preceded by a segment in which Rooney looks back on his career in an interview with Morley Safer.

“There’s nobody like Andy and there never will be,” Jeff Fager, chairman of CBS News and the executive producer of 60 Minutes, said in a statement Tuesday. “He’ll hate hearing this, but he’s an American original. His contributions to 60 Minutes are immeasurable; he’s also a great friend.  It’s harder for him to do it every week, but he will always have the ability to speak his mind on 60 Minutes when the urge hits him.”

Rooney, 92, has delivered 1,096 original essays for 60 Minutes since July 1978.
