(LOS ANGELES) -- Ashthon Jones got the boot on American Idol Thursday night, leaving 12 contestants in the competition.
Jones sang Diana Ross' "When You Tell Me That You Love Me" for the judges, who decided not to use their one save of the season to keep her from elimination. Karen Rodriguez and Haley Reinhart were in the bottom three with Jones, but they'll be back next week.
Casey Abrams was sick and in the hospital during Thursday night's show, so he didn't take part in the group tribute to Michael Jackson. The other 12 contestants worked their way through "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," "Rock with You," "Black or White" and "Man in the Mirror."
American Idol alum Adam Lambert returned to the stage that made him famous to sing a stripped-down version of his song "Aftermath." Lambert also talked about the remix of that song he's put out to benefit The Trevor Project organization.
In addition, Diddy-Dirty Money performed their platinum single "Coming Home," featuring Skylar Grey.
American Idol's top 12 will perform next Wednesday night at 8:00 ET on Fox.
