Demi Lovato Talks Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis on "GMA"

ABC/Heidi Gutman(NEW YORK) -- It's been nearly two years since Demi Lovato had a breakdown that caused her to cancel her tour, lose her Disney Channel show and undergo treatment for then-undisclosed personal issues. Now that the 19-year-old singer has revealed she has bipolar disorder, she hopes her openness will encourage others to seek help.

"It's not about being perfect. It's about speaking about your issues and inspiring others to get help," Demi said on Friday's Good Morning America concerning why she went public with her diagnosis. "I don't think it does anybody any good to just hide something..."

The newest X Factor judge said she knew something was wrong with her when she would stay up until the wee hours of the morning, playing her guitar. "I just couldn't stop going for days on end...I'd have crazy mood swings," Lovato said. "And finally when I got diagnosed with [bipolar disorder] I was like, 'Oh cool. I'm not crazy. It's a disease.'"

The second season of The X Factor, featuring Demi and Britney Spears as new judges, debuts Wednesday, September 12 on Fox.
