Bob Dylan Celebrates 70th Birthday

Jeff Kravitz/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- Blow out a birthday candle for Bob Dylan, because Tuesday is the iconic songwriter and rock legend's 70th birthday.

Dylan's 70th is celebrated in Rolling Stone magazine's newest issue, which features Dylan on the cover and includes a list of his 70 greatest songs, according to a panel of Dylan experts, writers and artists.  Rolling Stone writer Christian Hoard tells ABC News Radio that the magazine decided to celebrate Dylan's 70th birthday because he's "the greatest songwriter of the rock and roll era."  Hoard added, "If he stopped writing songs at the end of the '60s we'd still be talking about him."

Rolling Stone ranks Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" as his greatest song.  Hoard says the pick was made because the song "was really like nothing else going on at the time...it really expanded the possibilities of what a song could be."  Hoard went on to say that popular music was changed completely by Dylan's writing style.  He said that songs written before Dylan were "two-and-a-half minutes of verse, chorus, verse, chorus.  After Dylan, it was like the subject matter could be anything.  Songs could go on for 10 minutes...they could sound, kind of, dirty and messy and jagged...he just really expanded the form of popular song."

Regarding how Dylan has managed to stay relevant over the years, Hoard chalks it up to his tireless touring.  "For, I guess, 20-plus years now, he's just been on the road and refuses to not be on the road," Hoard says.  He adds that Dylan is in the middle of what's called "the never-ending tour" and that he "does not seem to want to sit still.  Perhaps he's not able to sit still."
