"Lincoln" Earns Leading 10 Nominations for BAFTAs

David James, SMPSP©DreamWorks II Distribution Co., LLC(LONDON) -- The Steven Spielberg film Lincoln is the leading nominee for this year's British Academy Film Awards, or the BAFTAs.

The drama received 10 nods on Wednesday for the U.K.'s answer to the Oscars.  It is nominated for best film, leading actor for Daniel Day-Lewis, supporting actor for Tommy Lee Jones, and supporting actress for Sally Field.  However, Spielberg was left out of the best-director race.

Lincoln is expected to receive several nominations Thursday morning for the Oscars.  It's the leading nominee for this Sunday's Golden Globe Awards.

Les Miserables and Life of Pi both picked up nine BAFTA nominations.  The James Bond film Skyfall has eight nods.

The BAFTAs will be presented on Feb. 10 at London's Royal Opera House.

'The Artist' Has Big Night at the BAFTAs, Wins Seven Awards

"The Artist" director Michel Hazanavicius. GABRIEL BOUYS/AFP/Getty Images(LONDON) -- The Artist captured seven awards Sunday night at the BAFTAs, the British equivalent to the Oscars.

The silent movie was named best film, and its lead star, Jean Dujardin, received the best leading actor prize.  Michel Hazanavicius earned awards for best director and best original screenplay for his work on The Artist.

Meryl Streep won the award for best leading actress, for The Iron Lady.  The supporting actor and actress prizes went to Beginners star Christopher Plummer and The Help star Octavia Spencer, respectively.

The Gary Oldman drama Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy received the award for outstanding British film.

'The Artist' Scores 12 BAFTA Nominations

GABRIEL BOUYS/AFP/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The hit silent movie The Artist continues to gain momentum heading to the Academy Awards.  It won three Golden Globe Awards Sunday, and on Monday it picked up a leading 12 nominations for this year’s British Academy Film Awards, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy is nominated in 11 BAFTA categories.  Hugo received nine nominations, while The Help and War Horse picked up five nods each.

The British film awards are considered a barometer for the upcoming Academy Awards.  The BAFTA trophies will be handed out on Feb. 12 in London.
