(MINDELO, Cape Verde) -- Cesaria Evora, the so-called "barefoot diva," died on Saturday in Mindelo, Cape Verde, at the age of 70.
Evora earned her sobriquet for always performing without shoes. She gained enormous recognition in the world music scene for performing the music of the Cape Verde Islands in western Africa. The Portuguese-inflected music suited Evora's passionate style.
Evora won a Grammy for her album "Voz D'Amor" in World Music in 2003.
