David Arquette Finally Files for Divorce from Courtney Cox

Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic(NEW YORK) -- They separated nearly two years ago, but actor David Arquette has now finally filed for divorce from Courtney Cox, reports.  According to the paperwork, which was signed in March, Arquette held onto the papers for months before filing.

The 40-year-old actor cites "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the divorce, and has asked for joint legal custody of their daughter, Coco, who turns eight Wednesday.

Arquette does not have a lawyer and appears to be representing himself. The divorce papers reportedly did not detail how their property and assets would be divided.

The estranged couple, who met on the set of Scream in 1995, get along fine.  In an interview, Cox said recently that their relationship is better "than it would be if we lived together."  Cox was often seen in the audience cheering Arquette on when he competed on ABC's Dancing with the Stars, for example.

The couple wed in June 1999, and initially split in October 2010.

Courteney Cox, David Arquette Celebrate Separation

Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) -- After a rocky couple of months, Courteney Cox and David Arquette both have something to celebrate. She's got a new movie, Scream 4, coming out Friday, and he's more than 90 days sober.

For Scream 4, Cox reprised her role as tabloid reporter Gale Weathers, who's married to Arquette's David Dewey. That was awkward: Cox and Arquette met each other on the set of the first Scream movie, but by the time filming for Scream 4 rolled around, their 11-year-old marriage was falling apart. (They separated in October.)

"I would say we're probably better now than we were during that movie," Cox told Entertainment Weekly Monday night at Scream 4's Los Angeles premiere. "The movie was just a little bit of a tough time. I don't have the fondest memories of those particular moments during that film."

But, she said, "It's not hard to watch, because we've moved past that phase. Some times were really fun....I don't remember us ever getting into a fight. It wasn't like that."

Arquette enjoyed his own good time in Chile earlier this month, dancing onstage with the band Cypress Hill to celebrate 90 days of sobriety. He seemed to love South America. On March 31, Arquette tweeted, "Chile is remarkable, and the Explora Resorts are flawless. I hope you can make it to this incredible country sometime." Five days later, he wrote, "I absolutely loved Santiago, Chile! If you have a chance you MUST visit South America."

2011's been rough on the actor -- in March, he was in a head-on car collision in Los Angeles (no one was injured).

Arquette entered a rehab program for alcohol abuse and depression in January. That came after weeks of public confessions, including his admitting on Howard Stern's radio show that "I am definitely having a nervous breakdown."

After March's car crash, Arquette made moves to show that he was still sober. He wrote on Twitter, "Refused all pain medication -- may the record state -- still sober!"

Both Cox and Arquette hit the red carpet of Scream 4's premiere Monday night. While Cox arrived hand-in-hand with co-star Neve Campbell, Arquette arrived solo.
