Film Independent Spirit Awards: 'Silver Linings Playbook' Is Big Winner

John Shearer/Getty Images For Piaget(NEW YORK) -- Silver Linings Playbook shone at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, a kind of prelude to Hollywood's biggest awards -- the Oscars, winning four of the honors given to the best of independent films.

The film, which was nominated in five categories, won best picture, best director and best screenplay for David O. Russell, and best actress for Jennifer Lawrence, who also won best actress at the Golden Globes.

Bradley Cooper was also nominated for best actor for his role in the film, but he lost out to John Hawkes for The Sessions.

Helen Hunt, Hawkes' co-star in The Sessions, also won in the best supporting actress category.

The best supporting actor award went to Matthew McConaughey for Magic Mike.

The Spirit Awards “celebrates artist-driven filmmaking and recognizes the finest achievements of today's independent filmmakers," according to the Film Independent website.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards were first given out in 1984, which were known as the FINDIE Awards (Friends of Independents). The awards were later renamed as Independent Spirit Awards in 1986.

Saturday Night Live cast member Andy Samberg was this year's host.

Unlike other award shows, the Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony is a luncheon event in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, Calif., but the winners were not announced until after the ceremony aired Saturday on IFC at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Director of ‘The Fighter’ Accused of Groping Transgender Niece’s Breasts

GABRIEL BOUYS/AFP/Getty Images(BROWARD COUNTY, Fla.) -- An investigation has been launched into an allegation made against Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell by his 19-year-old transgender niece.

Russell, the director of The Fighter, is accused of allegedly touching the breasts of his niece, who was born male and is in a preoperative phase of her transition, TMZ reported Thursday.

According to the TMZ, Russell had joined the niece for a workout at a South Florida hotel gym on Dec. 30 and was asking questions about her breasts and the effect of hormones she’s taking to enlarge them when he touched them.

According to a police report filed three days after the incident, the niece told authorities she felt “uncomfortable,” but admitted she “did not ask him to stop at any time.”

According to the police report, when Russell was contacted by investigators, he confirmed he did touch his niece’s breasts but only after she had given him permission.

A police officer noted in the report that Russell stated his niece “is always causing drama since the transgender transformation and has become very provocative and seductive.”

The Broward County Sheriff’s Department told TMZ the case is currently under investigation and authorities plan to re-interview both parties.  Reps for Russell have not been available for comment.
