Poll: Denzel Washington Is America's Favorite Movie Star

Alberto E. Rodriguez/WireImage(NEW YORK) -- If the average American had a say in this year's Oscars voting, Denzel Washington would have a good chance of winning the best-actor category.

Washington, who's nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Flight, has been named America's favorite movie star for 2012 in a new Harris Poll.  He's followed by Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks.

Johnny Depp, who ruled the 2011 edition of the poll, fell to fourth place.

Eastwood was tops among male voters and Republican voters, while Washington was the favorite among female voters and Democratic voters.  It's not surprising that Eastwood was the choice of Republicans, since he delivered his infamous "empty chair" speech at the Republican National Convention last year.

Harris Interactive surveyed more than 2,000 adults between Dec. 12 and 18 to compile its list.

Here are the top 10 favorite movie stars, according to the poll:

1. Denzel Washington
2. Clint Eastwood
3. Tom Hanks
4T. Johnny Depp
4T. Brad Pitt
6. John Wayne
7. George Clooney
8. Harrison Ford
9. Meryl Streep
10. Matt Damon
