Chris Brown Says Elton John Has Been 'a Good Friend' to Him

Chris Polk/FilmMagic(NEW YORK) -- Chris Brown lost some longtime supporters in the music industry when he assaulted Rihanna in 2009, but he's also found some unlikely folks who are in his corner, like rock legend Elton John.  "I met Elton about a year ago, and he's been a good friend to me," Chris told the New York Post's Page Six.

In fact, Chris was one of the many guests this past Sunday at Elton's star-studded charity Oscar viewing party, along with Britney Spears, Bono, Miley Cyrus, Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson, and more.  Entertainment Weekly reports that at the party, Elton, who's taken many other young performers under his wing in the past, was happy to pose with Chris for photographers, and took him around to say hi to some of the big names at the event.

Chris told EW, "It was an honor for him to personally invite me and it’s a blessing to be here."  Noting that the event raised money for Elton's AIDS Foundation, Chris said, "At the end of the day, I’m not homophobic in any way and I don’t focus on the negative that people bring to it.”

When Chris was reminded of the year that Elton performed at the Grammy with Eminem after the rapper was accused of being homophobic, he told EW, referring to Elton, "I think he does what he thinks is right and finding the positive while a lot of other people focus on the negative.”

Chris showed up to the party without a date, but confirmed that he and Rihanna are back together.  "She is the most beautiful girl in the world," Chris told the Post, adding that he was "sad" she couldn't come with him to Elton's shindig because she was rehearsing for her upcoming Diamonds world tour.

Elton John and Partner Welcome Second Son

CARL DE SOUZA/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- After denying a report to the effect last week, Elton John and his partner David Furnish have now confirmed that they are indeed new dads again.

A brief statement on Elton John's official website declares, "Elton and David are very pleased to announce the birth of their child Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John on Friday, January 11."

The website then directs visitors to the Hello! magazine website for details.

Hello! reports that the new child was born via surrogate in Los Angeles and weighs eight pounds, four ounces.

"Both of us have longed to have children, but the reality that we now have two sons is almost unbelievable," the magazine quotes Elton, 65, and 50-year-old Furnish as saying.  "The birth of our second son completes our family in a most precious and perfect way.  It is difficult to fully express how we are feeling at this time; we are just overwhelmed with happiness and excitement."

The couple's other son, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, was born on Christmas Day 2010.

Elton John Bass Player Dead of Apparent Suicide

Gilbert Carrasquillo/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) -- Bassist Bob Birch, a longtime member of Elton John's band, has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

According to TMZ, the musician, who was 56 years old, was found dead Wednesday morning "around the corner from his home" in Los Angeles with a gunshot wound to the head.  Police officials report that neither a suicide note nor drugs were found at the scene.

Birch has been playing with John since 1992, and had contributed to many of the pop star's recordings over the years, including his hugely successful Princess Diana tribute single "Candle in the Wind 1997."  The bass player also worked with a wide variety of other music stars, including Eric Clapton, Sting, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Don Henley, Brian Wilson, Phil Collins and Cher, according to Pedulla Bass Guitars, the company whose instruments Birch endorsed.

A message responding to the news of Birch's death has been posted on Elton's website, reading, "We are very sad to report the sudden death today of Bob Birch, Elton’s bass player and backing vocalist, in Los Angeles.  Bob had been a member of the Elton John band since 1992, the longest-serving bassist in Elton’s touring band.  We send love and condolences to Michele Birch, and to their son, Jonathan."

Lady Gaga's Friend Elton John Worries that She's Too 'Frail' and 'Doesn't Eat'

ABC/ Ida Mae Astute(LONDON) -- Lady Gaga is in the middle of her lengthy Born This Way Ball world tour, and has a punishing schedule -- which is causing one of her celebrity friends to worry about her.

Speaking to the British paper The Guardian, rock legend Elton John, a friend of Gaga's who tapped her to be godmother to his son Zachary, says he's concerned about Gaga's health because she works so hard.  In fact, he's so worried that he's actually spoken to her parents about it.

"I look at Gaga and I think, 'How does she do it?'" Elton tells the paper.  "I talk to her mum and dad about it. They worry. She is frail, and she doesn't eat when she should do, and she's a girl, and it's tougher for a girl."  Elton notes that Gaga's schedule means that she's "in Denmark one night and Saudi Arabia the next," adding, "I know how tiny she is and I do worry about her, yes."

Elton John Suffering from Serious Respiratory Infection, Cancels Performances

Kevin Mazur/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- Elton John is suffering from a serious respiratory infection, and has been forced to cancel performances of his Las Vegas show The Million Dollar Piano on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

Elton first became ill last weekend but his condition worsened and he was hospitalized at L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Wednesday.  After undergoing tests for a day, a doctor recommended that Elton not perform for a week and follow a regimen of antibiotics and complete rest.

In a statement, Elton said, "It feels strange not to be able to perform these ‘Million Dollar Piano’ concerts at The Colosseum. I love performing this show and I will be thrilled when we return to The Colosseum in October to complete the eleven concerts soon to be scheduled."

He added, "All I can say to the fans is sorry I can't be with you. I hope to see you soon at this wonderful theatre at Caesars Palace."  Ticket holders can exchange their tickets or receive refunds.

Elton John Talks New Super Bowl Ad, Offers Madonna Advice

CARL DE SOUZA/AFP/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- This year, music legend Elton John will grace television screens across the country on Feb. 4.  No, he's not planning a career in sports.  John will star in a Pepsi ad that will air during the Super Bowl, alongside X Factor winner Melanie Amaro.

In his exclusive interview with ABC News' Chris Connelly, John talks about his love of football and how he's a big fan of the New England Patriots, who face the New York Giants in this year's big game. "The Super Bowl is always an event, no matter where you are in the world," John said. "I've watched it with my road crew.  It's a great American occasion."

Elton John is good friends with Patriots owner Robert Kraft.  Kraft's wife, Myra, lost her battle with cancer this year.  This deep personal loss is making Elton John even more vocal during this year's game. "Well, you can't watch sport without being passionate -- oh yeah, I scream at the television and -- you live with your heart in your mouth," he said. "I'm hoping for a Patriots win this year because Robert Kraft is my dear friend and he lost his lovely wife Myra this year and I would love the Patriots to win for her."

A family man, John and partner David Furnish are already raising their 13-month-old son as a sports fan. "He's only a year old so he's a little young, but he does like soccer already," he said. "Because he plays with his feet, he loves kicking the ball.  He's too young to catch the ball yet, but he kicks the ball and he loves it and he likes watching soccer on the TV."

At just over a year old, Zachary's been to more places than most adults have visited. "He's been to Hawaii twice.  He's been to Australia, Italy, France, Singapore, Canada -- he comes where we go," John said.

One location Elton John or Zachary won't be visiting is the Super Bowl half time show.  In a Twitter post after the Golden Globes, Furnish wrote "Madonna. Best song???? F**k off!!!" which he later apologized for on Facebook.

When asked if he would ever perform at the Super Bowl, John replied, "I've never seen a decent one, never ever."

However, John does offer Madonna some advice for this year's show: "Make sure you lip-sync good," he said with a laugh.

Madonna, Elton John and David Furnish Make Up

CARL DE SOUZA/AFP/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Madonna and Elton John are making nice. After the Material Girl said she didn’t feel bad for beating out the Rocket Man to win the best original song Golden Globe (a category John thought he had locked down), John’s husband, David Furnish, slammed her online. Now everyone’s calmed down.

Madonna’s "Masterpiece" from her film “W.E.” won best song over John’s “Hello Hello” from Gnomeo & Juliet and Mary J. Blige’s “Living Proof” from The Help.

“Wow! What a tempest in a teapot My comments regarding The Golden Globes have been blown way out of proportion,” Furnish wrote on his Facebook page Thursday.

“Madonna. Best song???? F**k off!!!” Furnish initially wrote on Facebook on Sunday. Backstage, Madonna quipped, “I hope he speaks to me for the next couple of years. He’s been known to get mad at me so I don’t know. He’s brilliant and I adore him so he’ll win another award. I don’t feel bad!”

Elton John Wants Justin Timberlake to Play Him in Biopic

Bennett Raglin/Getty Images for Neuro(LOS ANGELES) -- Elton John won’t be shedding “crocodile tears” but real ones if another certain A-list singer is not able to portray him in a planned biopic of his life.

“No. 1 on my wish list is Justin Timberlake,” John told the Los Angeles Times when asked whom he wanted to see play him in what the singer-songwriter described as a “surreal look” at his life.

“He played me before in a David LaChapelle video of Rocket Man and was superb,” John, 64, said of Timberlake.

The video that propelled Timberlake to the top of John’s wish list was actually for "This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore," a single off his 2001 Songs From the West Coast album.  In the video, Timberlake portrayed a younger, Rocket Man-era version of John.

That era is the takeoff for the biopic, currently titled Rocketman. It was announced last September that the singer would both executive produce and, of course, be the focus of the film.

John confirmed on Sunday that the project, off the radar since the announcement, is still very much in the works.

“We have a director on board, and then it’s just going to be a matter of getting the script exactly the way we want it,” he said. “Lee Hall has written a script -- he wrote Billy Elliott -- and then we’ll start trying to cast and plan.”

John may be so hopeful that he can get his first choice, Timberlake, to star in the film, because he was not successful in getting his first choice for a director.

“We tried to get Baz [Luhrmann], but Baz is so busy,” John told the Times.

Luhrmann is the famed Australian director who oversaw the production of the film Moulin Rouge, which John said is how he envisions his own story being told.

“…It’s going to be a surreal look at my life, and not just a factual look at my life, more in the manner of a Moulin Rouge," he said.  “I just don’t want it to be a normal biopic because my life hasn’t been like that.”

John said another director for the film has been selected, and that an announcement will come soon.

Six-time Grammy winner Timberlake, who has not yet commented publicly on the nod from John, made his own transition from music to movies with a critically-acclaimed role in the 2010 film The Social Network, about Facebook, and more recent appearances in Bad Teacher and Friends With Benefits.

He most recently signed on to play Dave Van Ronk in the latest Coen brothers project Inside Lewyn Davis, a film about the early '60s folk scene in Greenwich Village.

Elton John Nominated for 'Celebrity Dad of the Year'

ABC/Ida Mae Astute(LONDON) -- Since Elton John became a father over Christmas, he's pretty much been everywhere talking about how much he loves his new son, Zachary.  Maybe that's why he's been nominated for Britain's "Celebrity Dad of the Year" award. The British paper The Independent reports that both Elton and his partner, David Furnish, are up for the award, the first gay couple to be so honored.

According to the organizers of the honor, the Celebrity Dad of the Year Award was created to "reward the celebrity dad who has impressed the nation by balancing a hectic public life with the demands of parenting."

Among Elton's competition is David Beckham -- ironic, since Elton is godfather to two of Beckham's sons.
