Elvis Presley Died 35 Years Ago

Hulton Archive/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Thursday marks the 35th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death.  The King of Rock 'n' Roll died of a heart attack at age 42 at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tenn.

As it does every August, Graceland has been hosting a series of events celebrating Presley's life and music this week.  The 2012 Elvis Week kicked off last Friday and is scheduled to run through this Saturday.

One of the major highlights of the 35th anniversary commemoration of Presley's passing is a special concert that will be held Thursday night at Memphis' FedEx Forum.  The show will feature screenings of some of Presley's classic in-concert moments and appearances by his ex-wife, Priscilla, and daughter, Lisa Marie.

The event also will boast live performances by a wide variety of musicians associated with the King, including longtime Presley drummer DJ Fontana, as well as TCB Band guitarist James Burton and piano player Glen Hardin.

The Country Music Hall of Fame also is featuring a number of Elvis-themed events this week to coincide with the anniversary.

Meanwhile, Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley also are scheduled to make appearances Thursday on the Today show and Entertainment Tonight.

Actually, a slew of Elvis-related events, exhibitions, promotions and releases have been planned throughout 2012 in conjunction with the milestone anniversary.

Last month, a fan-selected compilation album titled I Am an Elvis Fan hit stores, while a box set called Prince from Another Planet gathering audio and video from Presley's 1972 run of concerts at New York City's Madison Square Garden is due out on Oct. 30.

Elvis Presley’s Crypt to Be Sold at Auction

Hulton Archive/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The crypt where Elvis Presley was first laid to rest before his body was reburied at Graceland will go under the auctioneer's hammer next month.

The New York Times reports the private crypt, in the mausoleum at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., will be just one of many rock and roll memorabilia items scheduled for auction by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.

Elvis Presley was interred in the private crypt alongside his mother Gladys for about two months after he died in 1977 while Presley’s father waited for permission to perform a burial at the singer’s Graceland estate.  The crypt, which has remained empty ever since, is expected to go on sale at a starting price of $100,000.

Other items featured in the upcoming sale include a cigarette pack signed by The Beatles, a robe worn by Amy Winehouse in her video for “Rehab,” and a collection of Chinese ceramic dogs once owned by Meat Loaf.  The auction will run June 23 and 24.

Elvis Presley’s Alleged Long-Lost Swedish Daughter Sues

Hulton Archive/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- A Swedish woman who claimed she is Lisa Marie Presley and even wrote a book about her ordeal filed suit against the King of Rock and Roll’s estate for libel and emotional damages she claimed she suffered after she received a scathing letter from the Presleys’ lawyer.

Lisa Johansen filed suit in U.S. District Court last week, seeking $130 million for libel and emotional damages.

“One need look at little more than the description of her ludicrous tome on Amazon to recognize that, at best, Lisa Johansen is delusional,” Hollywood attorney Marty Singer wrote on behalf of the Presley estate.

Johansen published a memoir called I, Lisa Marie: The True Story of Elvis Presley’s Real Daughter in 1998.

“Dazed by grief over the sudden death of her famous father, the young girl is whisked from her life in America to the obscurity of a comfortable exile in Scandinavia. It is for her own safety that she must assume a new identity until she comes of age to take her rightful place as the sole heir of a huge estate,” reads a description of the book.

“Lisa Marie (aka Lisa Johansen) Presley” has been known to certain members of the Presley family ever since she began making the strange claim many years ago that she was Lisa Marie Presley,” Singer wrote.

He said the family remained intent on taking the “high road,” despite Johansen’s behavior.

Singer wrote of several bizarre instances involving Johansen, including the time when she tricked staff into letting her into restricted areas of Graceland.

She “fled when a security alarm rang,” Singer wrote, adding that “she was later seen on surveillance video after removing items from the property.”

A representative from Graceland declined to comment on the suit.

Elvis Presley to Be Named Honorary Citizen of Budapest

Hulton Archive/Getty Images(LONDON) -- The King of Rock is about to become a citizen of Budapest, Hungary nearly 34 years after his death.

Elvis Presley is set to be honored with citizenship and a landmark that will bear his name, according to The Guardian.  Budapest mayor Istvan Tarlos says the reason for Presley being honored is "not sentimental but political."

The King championed the Hungarian revolution in 1956, when the people rose up against their Soviet-run government, even though the revolt was crushed only a few weeks later.  Presley appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1957 and performed "Peace In The Valley" in honor of the Hungarian people.

The city has opened an online poll for citizens to vote on which of the 12 local landmarks should be renamed after Presley.  The voting ends March 15.

Elvis Presley's Birthday Celebrated at Graceland

Photo Courtesy - Getty Images(MEMPHIS) -- Fans are marking what would be the 76th birthday of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley with a celebration at his Graceland estate -- and one of Elvis' biggest fans is taking part.

Rescued Chilean miner Edison Pena is in Memphis for Saturday's celebration and will be taken on a private tour of Presley's birthplace and his boyhood home in east Tupelo, Mississippi.

During the 69 days that he and 31 other miners were trapped underground in Chile, Pena lifted the crew's spirits by belting out Elvis classics. While touring Graceland on Friday, Pena shot video on his cell phone and occasionally broke out into song, singing Elvis favorites like "Hound Dog." Although he knows little English, he treated the press to a rendition of "Blue Suede Shoes."

Pena's five-day visit to Memphis includes stops at a practice session of the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies and a stay at the Peabody Hotel, which lies in the heart of "blues city."

In addition to leading his fellow trapped miners in sing-alongs to Elvis' hits, Pena kept fit and active by jogging to Presley's music. He made headlines last November when he participated in the New York marathon.
