Extradition Request for Randy Quaid and Wife Denied

Paul Hawthorne/Getty Images(TORONTO) -- Randy Quaid and his wife Evi can remain in Canada after an attempt to have the couple extradited to the U.S., where they are wanted for allegedly squatting in a home they once owned, was rejected.

The Canadian Press reports the extradition request made by California's Santa Barbara County district attorney's office in June has been denied by the U.S. Department of Justice.

According to a statement from the district attorney's office, the Department of Justice determined that extradition would've required a "resource intensive and lengthy process."  The Department of Justice also stated that extradition is generally reserved for more serious offenses.

The Quaids fled to Vancouver following their arrest last September in California and sought refugee status, claiming they were being targeted by a deadly celebrity assassination group they called "Hollywood star whackers."

Evi Quaid gained Canadian citizenship in February.
