Narrator of 'The Lone Ranger' Dead at 89

Photo Courtesy - Online USA/Getty Images(WOBURN, Mass.) -- Fred Foy, the announcer most fans recognize as the narrator for the The Lone Ranger radio and TV shows, has died of natural causes in his home in Woburn, Massachusetts.  He was 89.

For children growing up in the days before television, Foy's voice -- set to the stirring strings of "The William Tell Overture" -- promised new adventures set against the sprawling backdrop of the Wild West.  Foy segued from radio into television voiceover work and reprised his Lone Ranger openings on the TV reboot of the show from 1949-1957.  For years afterward, Foy served as the voice of ABC, narrating documentaries and other programming.

Like most fans of the masked hero, Foy had a soft spot for his work on the Lone Ranger serials, and never tired of reciting the show's iconic opening -- and the Ranger's trademark "Hi-yo, Silver!" -- for any fans eager to hear it.
