(NEW YORK) -- Even though the Gathering of the Vibes festival has been going on for 16 years, it's still considered to be an under-the-radar summer music festival. However, all that will likely change with the announcement that Jane's Addiction and Elvis Costello are headlining this year's event, which runs from July 21-24 in Bridgeport, Conn. Festival founder Ken Hays also announced that artists including Levon Helm, Dr. John and the John Butler Trio will all be taking part in this year's installment. In addition, Furthur, featuring Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, are also on the bill, as is another Grateful Dead spinoff, The Rhythm Devils, featuring Micky Hart and Bill Kreutzmann.
When asked what makes the Gathering of the Vibes different from the Bonnaroos, Lollapaloozas and Coachellas of the world, Hays emphasized the importance of family. He said, "Number one is family. We had over 2,000 kids come with their parents last year. I think what stands out most is it's a family affair." The festival is also a camping event where patrons can pitch a tent on the festival grounds for the duration of the event. Hays says this is an important part of the festival because it adds a feeling of community to what he calls "an annual reunion...it's an annual party."
