This past November, Rafferty was reported to be in poor health and on life support after collapsing with liver failure.  In 2008, Rafferty reportedly "disappeared" from a London hospital where he was being treated for the same condition.  After friends said they hadn't heard from him in six months, his lawyers issued a statement in Feb. 2009 saying Rafferty was living in Italy and writing new music.  His last album of original material, Another World, came out in 2000.

Prior to scoring solo hits with "Baker Street" and "Right Down the Line," Rafferty was the lead singer of Stealers Wheel, with whom he released the hit single "Stuck in the Middle." That song was famously used during the gory "ear-cutting-off" scene of the Quentin Tarantino film Reservoir Dogs.
