"Dancing with the Stars" Honored at GLAAD Media Awards

ABC(NEW YORK) -- Dancing with the Stars was honored Saturday during the first round of the GLAAD Media Awards, held in New York. The ceremony, presented by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, honors media for their "fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives."

The ABC series was named outstanding reality TV program. The award was accepted by Carson Kressley, the openly-gay TV personality who competed on the fall 2011 season of Dancing with the Stars. That season also featured Chaz Bono, the first transgender contestant in series history.

Oprah Winfrey's now-defunct daytime talk show, the HBO miniseries Cinema Verite, and the film Pariah were among the other honorees.

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, whose credits include NBC's Smash and the movie adaptations of Chicago and Hairspray, were given the Vito Russo Award, recognizing "openly LGBT media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality for the LGBT community."

The ceremony was hosted by Glee stars Naya Rivera and Cory Monteith.
