Former 'Home Improvement' Child Actor Arrested for DUI

Jason Merritt/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The actor who played the youngest son on Tim Allen's 1990s sitcom Home Improvement was arrested on suspicion of DUI Wednesday morning in Los Angeles County. According to TMZ.com, police investigated 27-year-old Taran Noah Smith, a.k.a. Home Improvement's Mark Taylor, after his car was found parked at an angle in front of a fire hydrant. An officer also detected a "strong" marijuana odor emanating from the car.

Smith was subsequently arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of marijuana. Police reportedly found hashish, a more potent form of marijuana, in his car.

Smith has not acted on TV since 1999, the year Home Improvement went off the air.

Former Child Star Jonathan Taylor Thomas to Work Behind the Camera?

Jean-Paul Aussenard/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- When the ABC series Home Improvement ended its run in 1999, its young heartthrob, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, fell under the Hollywood radar, save for a few appearances on Veronica Mars and Smallville.  In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Thomas explains what he’s been up to, saying, “I’ve been going to school, and traveling quite a bit, getting to read a lot of books I’ve wanted to for quite some time.”

Thomas, now 30, says he would like to get back into show business, explaining, “I think at this point, I’d eventually like to work behind the camera.  That’s not to say I would never act again, I’m not quite sure to be honest. I still have a passion for TV and film and could see myself working in it.”

Thomas’ former co-star Tim Allen has a new ABC sitcom this fall entitled Last Man Standing.  When EW asked Thomas if Allen has suggested he do a guest shot, he replied, “That has not come up yet.  We’ll see about that. I’m sure they have a lot of stories they want to get to.”

Tim Allen Sticks with Familiar Premise for New ABC Show

George Doyle/Stockbyte(NEW YORK) -- Tim Allen is back on ABC this fall with a new comedy.

The former Home Improvement star leads the cast of Last Man Standing, playing a marketing director at an outdoor sporting goods store who's married with three daughters.

If you think that premise sounds very similar to that of Home Improvement, in which his character was a host of a TV home improvement show and a married father of three boys, it's not a coincidence.

Allen says there's no reason to change a formula that's been successful for him, telling reporters Monday at the Television Critics Association tour in Beverly Hills, "I thought it would be kind of fun literally to flip-flop the two shows. It isn't rocket science what I'm doing. Instead of tools, it's sporting goods and guns and ATVs and boats. And come home to have four women."

After Home Improvement ended its run in 1999, Allen says, he received many offers to star in other shows, but they were too different from his successful sitcom. He says that he even auditioned for a role in one show but rejected it, and the producers cast a woman for the part instead.  Allen wouldn't name the show, but says it's on the air now.

Allen's Last Man Standing debuts on ABC October 11.
