(NEW YORK) -- Jordin Sparks will be starring in the Broadway musical In the Heights until the middle of next month, and she says so far, it's been a great experience, both onstage and off.
For the first time in her life, the 20-year-old Sparks is living on her own, in her own place in New York City. She tells ABC News Radio, "This is the first time I've lived in an apartment where I can literally walk in, I have a key, and I go, 'Okay, I'm living here!'"
Sparks, who grew up in Arizona, says of living in Manhattan, "Just to go out and walk around...has been quite the adventure for me. I'm starting to learn the streets, and it's been fun to go out and...I don't have to wait for somebody else to go with me. I can go and I can explore." She admits that she hasn't taken the subway yet, though.
As far as her time onstage in the musical, Sparks says the hardest part for her has been portraying someone other than herself, and keeping what's happening in her personal life from affecting her performance.
She says, "That's definitely been a challenge, and also, just learning the choreography and the lines. The music's the easy part. It's everything else that I really have to focus on."
Her fellow cast members from In the Heights have lent her a helping hand, though. Sparks says, "They've...just welcomed me with open arms," and adds, "Being a part of this cast, I'm part of a bigger picture. So I don't have to carry the whole show on my shoulders, and I can rely on everybody."
